World Heritage Site

In the 18th century, an opera house was built in the small residential town of Bayreuth, which was in no way inferior in size and splendor to the most famous houses of its time. Above all, the Margravine Wilhelmine operated emphatically the new building. In just four years of construction, the Opera House was built from 1744 to plans by Joseph St. Pierre. The façade design was based on northern Italian models and set the opera house distinctively from the adjacent houses. The interior was designed by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena, probably the most famous theater architect of his time.
